Abstract

In the immediate aftermath of the 2008 global financial crisis, more than 7,000 e-commerce villages emerged in rural China. Initially arising as grassroots responses to economic instability and return migration, they were later framed as virtuous public–private partnerships enabled by digital platforms, mainly Alibaba’s Taobao. Seen from the ground, this transformation entails a profound reconfiguration of labor, domestic and productive spaces and everyday infrastructures, described as “recursive ruralization,” the cyclical return of capital and technology into the rural to reactivate its spatial and socio-economic forms.

2008年全球金融危机后不久，中国农村涌现出超过7000个电子商务村。这些村庄最初是为应对经济不稳定和返乡潮而出现的基层自发行动，后来则被塑造为由数字平台（主要是阿里巴巴的淘宝）推动的、具有积极意义的公私合作模式。演讲人通过长期深入中国与农村的实地调研开展研究，发现从基层视角来看，这一转变意味着劳动力、家庭与生产空间以及日常基础设施发生了深刻的重构，这种现象被称为“递归式乡村化”——即资本和技术周期性地回流农村，以重新激活其空间形态和社会经济结构。

Intro

Sofia Leoni is an architect and PhD Candidate in Urban and Regional Development at Politecnico di Torino and part of the China Room research group since 2022. She received both her M.Arch. and B.Arch at Politecnico di Torino, after different period of studies at Tsinghua University in Beijing and at La Cambre-Horta, Faculté d’Architecture, Université Libre de Bruxelles. During her studies, she was involved in different architecture competitions, many activities in the academic environment and curatorial design. Her interest relies in the field of theories and cultures of urban design, with particular attention to processes of urbanization occurring in China and Asia. Her current research delves into the spatial effects associated to the logistic turn in rural areas of f the Southeast coast of China, particularly within the initiative Rural Taobao, promoted by the hi-tech company Alibaba, which aims to revitalize and transform rural economies by leveraging e-commerce platforms by extending the Taobao marketplace.

索菲亚·莱奥尼是都灵理工大学城市与区域发展专业的博士生，自2022年起加入中国研究小组。她先后在都灵理工大学获得建筑学硕士和学士学位，并曾在清华大学以及布鲁塞尔自由大学拉坎布-霍尔塔304am永利学习。求学期间，她参与了多项建筑设计竞赛、丰富的学术活动以及策展设计项目。她的研究兴趣集中于城市设计的理论与文化领域，尤其关注中国及亚洲地区的城市化进程。目前的研究聚焦于中国东南沿海农村地区物流转型所带来的空间效应，特别是由高科技企业阿里巴巴发起的“农村淘宝”计划——该计划通过拓展淘宝电商平台，推动电子商务赋能乡村经济，实现乡村振兴与转型。
